About the region

Colombia is the world's second largest coffee producer and the leading source of washed Arabica beans. Renowned for exceptional quality, Colombian coffee dominates global markets, with roughly half of exports reaching the United States. The country produces approximately 12.5 million bags annually for export, whilst domestic consumption accounts for around 2 million bags. Colombian coffee exclusively features washed Arabica varieties, with three primary types grown across distinct regions throughout the country. Each region imparts its own character, creating a diverse portfolio of sought-after coffees. "Excelso" is a Colombian export grading classification unrelated to variety or flavour profile. Under European Preparation (EP) standards, all raw beans are hand-sorted to eliminate defects and foreign material. Excelso beans are large—screen size 15-16—slightly smaller than Supremo beans (screen 17). Grading occurs before shipment based on bean size; Supremo and Excelso beans may originate from the same tree but are separated during sorting. Excelso represents the greatest volume of Colombian coffee exports and includes good-to-large flat beans alongside peaberries.

Flavour Profile

Supremo coffee is celebrated for its smooth body, balanced acidity, and sweet aroma. Typical tasting notes include:
  • Bright but not sharp acidity
  • Medium to full body
  • Nutty and chocolate undertones
  • Clean, smooth finish
